Homestay Hosts

Start your hosting journey with Study Vision

Why should you become a homestay?

Homestay is a culturally enriching and financially rewarding home-based activity, that can lead to long-term friendships with people from around the world. Homestay involves providing accommodation, with or without meals (though most homestays do provide meals), to young international university or college students, or other international visitors, in return for a weekly payment. Homestay is available to all types of Australian households (families: with/without kids, single parents, empty nesters or pensioners) who have spare bedrooms and are located within a reasonable travel time by direct public transport to major Universities and other educational institutes, across Australia and New Zealand.

What you need to provide your guest?

A Home

Your home should be clean, orderly, in good repair (not under renovation), and comply with council building regulations.

Furnished Bedroom

The most essential requirements for hosting a student is to have a furnished room which at the minimum includes a single bed with linen, wardrobe and a desk with a small lamp. The room should be in the main house, however granny flats may be acceptable, depending on their condition and facilities.

Internet Access

Hosts need to provide a decent broadband internet connection (ADSL, Cable or NBN) for the student to use. The host will receive an additional weekly payment for providing this.

Meals

The usual expectation is for hosts to provide students with two meals Monday to Friday and three meals on the weekend. Dinner should be with the host family, to encourage conversation and interaction between the student and the hosts.

Bathroom Facilities

The student will need access to a bathroom, either shared with the host family and other students, or their own private bathroom. If the student has their own bathroom, the host may receive an additional weekly payment.

Laundry Facilities

Students will need to wash their clothes on a regular basis. Hosts should let their guests know when and how to use the laundry facilities.
